Essential Oils. What the hell are those? A bunch of mumbo-jumbo. Plexus for hippies! Definitely not for me! Don’t even talk to me about it. I can’t deal with another barrage of crap being virtually slung at me in the form of Facebook posts, emails and invitations to join secret groups!

That’s when I saw it. The proverbial carrot. Dangling in front of me in the form of a Facebook post from a friend talking about her kid who was sick with strep… and how she diffused some oil stuff and it kept the other two from getting it. That was a miracle. When one of her kids was sick the other two went down faster than the Titanic. That was the rule. What was this miracle potion that kept Things 2 and 3 from getting the dreaded strep bug? I needed more info. What’s this? Another delicious carrot. A friend used lavender to get her unruly child to sleep soundly. And another who diffused something called “peace and calming” during the dreaded late-afternoon witching hour (come on, don’t deny it, we all know what it is) and her kids actually behaved like normal, happy human beings. She even made it until their bedtime without busting into the wine. ANOTHER miracle! Now I was intrigued.

Could these essential oils really work? Could they make a difference in how we sleep, feel and our overall health? I’m not saying I’m ready to toss the medicine cabinet, because let’s face it, I love my modern medicine, but, I decided to do a little reading just in case.

The company I heard the most about was Young Living, so that’s the one I went with. I read some info on their Web site. These oils have been used for thousands of years. OK, makes sense. They are so pure you can even ingest them. Strange, but ok. It’s really about a total mind/body wellness experience. Hmm. Interesting.

So then I got on Facebook to see what everyone else thought. Holy mother! Do you have any idea how many people use this stuff? I mean really. It’s crazy. I had no idea. Apparently the essential oil train has left the station and I was the only one not on it. These were sane people. Normal people. Not hippies or weirdos. Well, some are but they’re still my friends. I decided to reach out to a local lady in my neighborhood to see if she would give me some info.

After chatting with her I decided to order a starter kit that came with 10 oils and a diffuser. I figured I would see what all the fuss is about. I don’t really know if Peace and Calming works yet, but I diffuse that crap like it’s the oxygen we breathe between 4 and 6 p.m. I mean, why not? Couldn’t hurt, might help. I had a huge bruise on my leg that wasn’t going away. I rubbed some lavender on it and it started to heal almost immediately. I’m not a doctor, but it clearly worked.

I like to put some stuff called Valor in my water when I work out. I swear I have more energy. Maybe it’s all in my head, but who cares? I figure it can’t hurt, it might help and it’s kind of fun to learn some new stuff.

OK – so it’s POSSIBLE that my husband gripes that our house smells weird. Whatever. (Maybe I just need to diffuse some Joy while he sleeps and see if that changes his attitude!) I don’t know if this is just a phase but for now, I’m all about the oils.
