Melanie Nicholas, often mistaken for the Wonder Woman of Mommydom, has one son and one daughter. Like their mother, they are flawless, brilliant and ridiculously good-looking. Before retiring her heels and briefcase, she worked in communications and journalism. Her award-winning work has appeared in numerous Texas papers and magazines. Voted Midland’s Favorite Columnist, she writes a by-monthly column for the local paper chronicling her amazing adventures fighting grime and insecurity. If she cinched her own waist with the Lasso of Truth, she would tell you that she is in love with her life but being a Wonder Momma is a lot of hard work. Once in a while, she would love a bubble bath and some champers. All by her lonesome. She and Prince Charming have been married for more than 15 years –even though, once upon a time, he took another girl to homecoming.

    Dear Melanie,

I had to respond to your column in the MRT this morning. I have been overweight most of my life, due to an autoimmune thyroid disorder. My heart hurt for you when you wrote about the ugly comments made about you. I see you as a lovely young woman. Be proud of yourself, and don’t stoop to the level of those who try to make you feel otherwise.

    God bless.

Paula, I can’t thank you enough for your support, honesty and compassion. It was hard to read, even harder to write about. I just wanted it to go away, but then I thought — WHY?? He has no right to talk about me like that! Hugs!!!

Two weeks ago your article on friendships was published on pages 2 and 3 of the local section of Midland Reporter Telegram On page 3 was an obituary of a long time friend that I had known since the 1960’s. I read both with moments of tears and laughter.

From the “whatever it is worth”department, bullies rarely respond to kindness, reason, or other reasonable measures. I guess they see all this as weakness. My mother told me to go whop up on a childhood bully at a trailer park where we lived or not come home for dinner. So I did and sent him away crying. But, he did not hit any of my friends or me any more after that.. Guess that shows that 5 and 6 year olds can make good decisions and be strong particularly if they are hungry

Hello! My name is Annabeth and I am from Midland. My mom was looking through your article about the dance fitness classes you attend at the gym on MRT and was really interested but didn’t know what gym it was so I dug a little and found you on here and wanted to ask if you could let me know so I can tell her it would be great!! Thank you so much, Annabeth Villalobos

Hi, Annabeth! Thanks so much for writing! I don’t know if any of the gyms there or Odessa offer a class like this. I would check the YMCA there for the Silver Sneakers class or even the Barre class if she is interested in ballet!I am taking this class in Arkansas. Wish she could join me!!

I too was in this predicament, trying to contact Melanie about this awesome class. I very much enjoy this type of thing and have taught my own classes in the past. I’d love to get something like this going in Midland, and the sooner the better. I’ve tried reaching out to the MLK community center by email, with no response. If I can get my ducks in a row here soon, I’m hoping I’ll be able to bring this type of program/group to our community. If you have any ideas, I’d love to hear them too!

Britt!! What a great idea! You could also talk to a church that maybe would let you use their gym area? Or even see if the YMCA would let you teach? Good luck and keep me posted! I would be glad to help spread the word!
